Google Chrome on the Mac!

June 5th, 2009

whatever you do, please DON’T DOWNLOAD THEM! Unless of course you are a developer or take great pleasure in incomplete, unpredictable, and potentially crashing software

http://blog.chromium.org/2009/06/danger-mac-and-linux-builds-available.html

So, I’m not what you would call a developer and I did download them…  Have I caused a black hole that will end life as we know it?

eInstruction CPS & Novell ZENworks Imaging

June 5th, 2009

We are having problems with our images this summer.  Each year we re-image every machine in the district.  This year, we are consistently getting the Blue  Screen of Death after applying the new image.  We can only correct the problem by removing the latest version of the CPS (Classroom Performance System) software from eInstruction.

If we revert back to the old version, the problem goes away.  I would like to run the new version of CPS, but right now we don’t have a choice.  Has anyone else run across this problem?  Any solution?

Clemson Controversy Calls Into Question US News College Rankings

June 5th, 2009

Since Baker decided to make Clemson a top 20 school in 2001, I have questioned many of Clemson’s decisions.  Unlike the article at blogs.wsj.com (“If a school targets those variables, students aren’t going to be hurt.”), I believe decisions can hurt students.

Cisco PIX and Microsoft Media Server

June 1st, 2009

We have streamed our high school graduations for several years (http://www.cherokee1.k12.sc.us).  We’ve gone through several setups for our stream during that time.  Most years we have used a Microsoft Media Server to publish the encoded stream.  This year, with almost an identical setup, I couldn’t get the stream to publish outside our PIX.  I found that by turning ‘Inspect RTSP’ off, I was able stream content outside our network.

Inspect RTSP is a default configuration on the ASA. It breaks the MMS traffic since the security appliance cannot perform NAT on RTSP messages because the embedded IP addresses are contained in the SDP files as part of HTTP or RTSP messages. Packets can be fragmented, and the security appliance cannot perform NAT on fragmented packets.

Workaround: This problem can be resolved if you disable the RTSP inspection for this particular MMS traffic as shown:

policy-map global_policy
class inspection_default
no inspect rtsp

twitter or friendfeed?

April 10th, 2009

Do you twitter?  Do you friendfeed?  Who is the winner 2 years from now? http://www.kyte.tv/ch/6118/401143
Does it matter? Once the press and celebs decide to go friendfeed (twitter is full of them), the base will move.

I’m getting a Kindle 2.0

February 12th, 2009

My first post about a Kindle was before Christmas.  I was about to make the purchase then, until I read that there were rumors of the Kindle 2.0.  So, I waited.  And I waited.

Then this past Monday, Amazon announced the release of the Kindle 2.0.  But, I had almost talked myself out of putting down the $360 + cost of a cover + cost of books.  So, I wasn’t going to buy one, but I still wanted one.  I thought that I would wait again just like I did before Christmas.  This time I would be waiting for the price to drop, because I’m sure it will.

And then……….  Nikki pre-ordered me a Kindle 2.0 today…………..  I Love Her :)

PowerSchool & InTouch

February 12th, 2009

We have used InTouch for several years with SASI, our current student information system.  We will soon make the transition to PowerSchool.  Much of the functionality of InTouch is built into PowerSchool.  We mainly use InTouch to give parents web-based access to their child’s grades, attendance, history, etc.  All of this can be and will be done through our implementation of PowerSchool.  One part that I haven’t found a way to replicate is the attendance dialer and IVR solution we have with InTouch.

I should be able to use AlertNow (emergency notification system) as an attendance dialer.  This will be a manual process, where InTouch was automated.  The IVR made it possible for parents without Internet access to call into the system and have it read to them their child’s information.  I’m not sure how we can copy that functionality.

If you have PowerSchool and using an IVR or attendance dialer, let me know your setup.

Unread Items in GMail

December 29th, 2008

I’ve had 2 emails lurking in my GMail inbox for a while now.  They slipped past me some months back and I havn’t taken the time to search for them.  In the past I would go page by page looking for the elusive mail.  Today I have found the correct way to search for that mail.  This saves much time and I’m sure most of you already knew of this trick, but it was a new one to me.

Use this command in the search box:

“in: inbox label:Unread

Hope that helps!

Your device does not currently have any browser configuration service book entries!!!!!

December 28th, 2008

Today I had several problems with my BlackBerry service.  It started with our BES server not functioning properly (and I’m over 200 miles away from the office and it’s a Sunday and it’s a Holiday weekend).  After several calls to Verizon and Research In Motion, that problem has been resolved.  The problems ended with the following error while trying to access the browser:

“Your device does not currently have any browser configuration service book entries”

I can’t post my solution to the first problem, but this is what I found after several searches to fix the second problem:

  • Go to OPTIONS
  • Go to ADVANCED OPTIONS
  • Go to HOST ROUTING TABLE
  • CLICK your trackwheel
  • CLICK on REGISTER NOW

Wait about 60 seconds or restart your phone to see the browser reappear.

This worked for me, if you are having the same problem, I hope it works for you too.
